Cautionary tale

Once upon a time there was a writer—let’s call her Beth. Beth was very happily writing books and sharing her process with anyone who was willing to listen. She was always open to feedback and comments, and she always kept all her doors open so no one had to knock and could just come in and participate in her creations. (As you have guessed, she just discovered writing and was so excited, she could barely contain it. Of course she wanted to share!)

Then one day one of Beth’s books (her second, in fact) started attracting more and more readers. Then it started winning prizes, and suddenly more and more people were squeezing through the doors into the rooms already packed with people, so the writer didn’t even have much room left to herself. She rejoiced. All this love, all this attention! Isn’t that what writing was about? To share it with all around you, and to give each other love?

I talked about this in class on Patreon, and I also posted it there, for patrons, but this example today is illustrating it even better.

It’s 2019, and as you’ve noticed, I stopped blogging daily. Mostly because this year I’m focusing on teaching you how to write a book in 3 months on Patreon (more about it here).

Thank you for your trust and your continuous subscription to my blog, about 500 of you who are staying with me no matter what I do (blog daily, don’t blog, blog about writing, about personal things, about crazy dark things that maybe shouldn’t be blogged about).

A simple question for you.

What would you like me to blog about?

Read a biography

Some days I feel down and think, “This is taking forever, this whole getting-better-at-writing thing. And I’m still not quite making a living at it. How much more? How much longer? I’m so tired of working my ass off. What am I doing wrong? What can I do better?” And so on. You know the drill.

On days like these I find it most inspiring to read a biography of a writer who made it. Or watch a movie about them.

Hear your story talk to you

by Ksenia Anske

Listening and hearing are not the same things.

You can listen to what your story is trying to tell you, and not hear it.

Every day, when you sit down to write, you’ll go on a rollercoaster of storytelling. Some days will be fantastic. Other days will be awful. Yet others will be dreary and dull.

And in all of those days will come a moment when you’ll stumble and know something is wrong.
